A listing that says "pets allowed" is only the start. Before you book, ask the resort:

• Can pets stay in the rooms or villa, or only on the grounds?
• Are there size, breed or number limits, and any extra charges?
• Is there open outdoor space for walks and play, ideally away from the pool and dining area?
• Can meals be arranged for you while your dog settles in?
• What should you know about local wildlife or night-time movement on the property?

A quick call answers most of this. A resort used to guests with dogs will reply easily. If the answer is hesitant or vague, take that as information.

Where Your Dog Will (and Won't) Be Comfortable

Coorg has no single official list of pet-friendly attractions, and rules differ from site to site. It helps to think in three groups.

Good bets. Plantation walks, quiet village lanes and the open lawns and gardens of your stay are the easiest outings for dogs. If you walk through a private coffee estate, ask permission first and keep your dog on a leash.

Think twice. Waterfall trails involve steps, slippery rocks and fast water in the monsoon, which is hard on dogs and their owners. Crowded viewpoints can also be stressful, especially for nervous or older dogs.

Best left at the property. Temples and monasteries, elephant camps and forest-department areas are generally not suited to dogs, and rules vary. Safaris run in forest-department vehicles inside a protected tiger reserve, so plan for your dog to rest at the stay or with a sitter while you go. Getting There: Car vs Train

By car is the simplest option for most pet parents. From Bengaluru the drive to Hatti Eden is about 210 km, roughly five hours, and from Mysuru about two hours. Plan a stop every couple of hours for water and a short walk, and if your dog gets car sick on winding roads, talk to your vet beforehand. If you're using a cab, check the operator's pet policy before booking rather than at pick-up.

By train is possible but takes planning. Indian Railways carries dogs in a First AC coupe if you book the entire coupe, or in a ventilated dog box in the luggage van. Pets are not allowed in other classes, and chair-car trains such as Shatabdi and Vande Bharat don't carry them at all. You'll need a recent vet fitness certificate, and the railway's booking process, charges and paperwork can change, so confirm them with IRCTC or the station parcel office. The nearest major railhead is Mysuru, and you'd still need about two hours by road from there, so door-to-door the car is often easier.

What to Pack for Your Dog

• Vaccination record (including rabies) and a recent photo of your dog
• Leash, harness and an ID tag with your phone number
• Familiar food and bowls, plus water for the journey
• Bed or blanket that smells like home
• Tick and flea prevention, and any regular medication
• Towels and a spare leash, which come in handy in wet weather
• Poop bags, and a small first-aid kit

If you're travelling in the monsoon, expect mud, damp grass and leeches, so check your dog's paws and coat after every walk.
